Raven Spirit Dance creates and produces contemporary dance that is rooted in Indigenous worldviews and honours the communities and artists we work with. We share stories through Indigenous perspectives and practices and create opportunities for others to do the same.

The company works from the following values:

  • Generosity
  • Integrity
  • Honoring
  • Courage

Raven Spirit Dance strives to balance its energies between these seven distinct but inter-related streams of activity:

1. Creation & Production: Research, creation and production of new work by RSD’s artistic team.

2. Presenting & Curating: Presentation and curation of the choreography of other Indigenous artists.

3. Touring: Tour new work and repertoire (locally, nationally and internationally), with an emphasis on strengthening relationships with Indigenous artists and communities.

4. Training: Provide training in Indigenous dance practices (contemporary, traditional, and somatic creative process) centering Indigenous artists.

5.Community Engagement: Prioritize activities that engage community around Indigenous creative work. RSD recognizes community is an integral container for its work.

6. Mentoring: Provide mentorship to Indigenous dance artists in the areas of administration, leadership, creation, and presentation.

7. Advocacy: Commitment to advocating for the presence and expression of Indigenous performance and worldview as an integral part of our society.

Confluence is a dance work that weaves our perspectives, our histories and our bodies to create somatic tapestry that speaks to the resilience of Indigenous women. We embody the space between land and sky through play, prayer, grief and gratitude and are the living testament to the legacy that has been offered to us. Aligning our lives with the direction of the water in a river or geese in migration, we acknowledge we are always in process, shaping and carving through landscapes, creating rhythms and discovering our stories.

Performers: Emily Solstice Tait, Jeanette Kotowich, Starr Muranko, Tin Gamboa and Michelle Olson
